Wales and Republic of Ireland are both out of the running to qualify for Euro 2008 but there is plenty to play for as they lock horns in Group D.
Germany and Czech Republic have already booked their spots at next summer's tournament but four teams are still in contention for third place, which would ensure a more favourable draw for the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Ireland are currently ahead of Cyprus, Slovakia and Wales, although the clash at Millennium Stadium is their final group game.
It is also their first match since the departure of Steve Staunton after last month's 1-1 draw with Cyprus, so Don Givens will be in caretaker charge.
If speculation is to be believed John Toshack's future as Wales boss could also be under threat following a disappointing run of results, but he is still determined to lead his country to third in the group.
Wales travel to Germany for their last game next Wednesday but then, like Ireland, they will not have another competitive match to look forward to until next autumn.
That is likely to add an extra edge to a fixture that will already have the feel of a derby about it, with players who compete against each other on a weekly basis in British football fighting it out for bragging rights.
Injury problems
Toshack has a number of injury concerns for Wales, with Craig Bellamy sidelined due to a groin problem.
Gareth Bale has also been forced to pull out of the squad with a foot injury, but Jason Koumas is expected to be fit despite missing Wigan's defeat to Tottenham because of sickness.
David Cotterill could be included in the side after earning a recall, while youngsters Arron Davies, David Edwards and Owain Tudor Jones will all be hoping to get a chance.
Ireland captain Robbie Keane is doubtful after sitting out training with a foot problem, but there is better news elsewhere for Givens.
Goalkeeper Shay Given, defender Paul McShane and winger Stephen Hunt are all available after recent injury problems.
