Albufeira 4 Nations Tournament
04.02.2010 at 16:00 - Municipal Stadium, Albufeira
REPUBLIC OF IRELAND Under-16 manager John Morling has announced a 20-player squad for the upcoming Four-nation tournament in Portugal from February 4-8.
The Irish will face Italy, Portugal and the Netherlands during the round-robin event which is being staged in the Algarve resort of Albufeira.
Ireland's were most recently in action last week when they drew both matches of a double-header away to Israel.
Morling feels the three games in Portugal will be integral to the development of his players.
"We will come up against three of the best nations within European football in Portugal and the players will benefit greatly from that experience," he said.
"Our performance levels in Israel were good, especially in the first game when Israel scored a late equaliser deep into stoppage time, but it was very important for the players to get some match-time after a long absence due to the weather.
"Putting the squad into an environment where they will play three matches in the space of five days will prepare them for what they can expect once they step up to participate in UEFA qualifying mini-groups next season at Under-17 level."
