Vincent Butler, Republic of Ireland U16 manager has announced a 20 man squad who will face France in a double international friendly on March 10th and 12th. Seven new players have been called up to the squad including Aston Villa duo, Richard Bryan and Derrick Williams, Brian McGroary from Eanny Celtic and Luke Williams from Middlesbrough.
The Irish will be looking to bounce back from their recent appearance at the Santarem International Tournament where they were defeated by Denmark, Portugal and Spain.
Irish manager, Vincent Butler was eager for his side to put the disappointment from the Santarem International tournament behind his team but insisted that his players have learnt a lot from their experiences, “The matches at Santarem International Tournament in Portugal were a learning experience for the squad and will stand to them when they start to play in the UEFA Youth qualification campaigns from next season.”
“I felt that the heavy defeats to Portugal and Spain were harsh on our side. We came up against two of the best teams in Europe and they both scored two late goals to put a flattering reflection on the score-line,” added Butler.
“France will also provide difficult tests for our lads but that’s what we need. It will be the first time that our team will have played at home since last year and I expect them to be physically and mentally better prepared than they were for the games in Portugal.
“We have made some squad changes for these two games because I think it’s important that we give other players a chance to show their capabilities at this stage of the season.
“The five players that have been left out from the last panel are still in our plans and will be selected for the residential training camp to be held later this month before we finish up the season in Italy at the Gradisca Tournament from April 25-30,” said Butler.

Republic of Ireland Under-16 manager Vincent Butler has called up Roy Collins (Ringmahon Rangers), Callum Webb (Arsenal) and Neil Yadolahi (St. Kevin’s Boys) to his squad for the double-header against France this week.
Ireland take on the French on Tuesday (3pm) and Thursday (11am), both games taking place at the Oscar Traynor Road Development Centre in Dublin.
Luke Williams (Middlesborough) and Derrick Williams (Aston Villa) were both forced to withdraw from the original 20-player squad due to injury, paving the way for Collins and Webb to deputise.
Defender Sean McGinty has school commitments to attend to later this week, meaning he will be available only for the first game. Neil Yadolahi has been called in to provide cover.
This International call-up is the first for Arsenal midfielder Webb, who qualifies for Ireland through his paternal grandparents.
Both Collins and Yadolahi were elevated to the panel after impressing during last month’s Under-16 ‘Late Developers’ matches away to Belgium.
