Vincent Butler has announced an 18 man squad who will travel to Portugal to take on Denmark, Spain and tournament hosts, Portugal for the Santarem International Tournament in Lisbon from the 20th - 24th February. Included in the squad is free-scoring striker, Daniel Purdy from Crumlin United, who already has three goals this season for the U16 side.
Vincent Butler will be hoping that his side can bounce back from their defeat to Northern Ireland in the Wilkinson Sword trophy last October.
Irish manager Vincent Butler looked ahead with great optimism to the Santarem International tournament, “Tournaments of this nature at this age group are a key element in the development of our younger players. Teams like Spain, Portugal and Denmark are traditionally strong at this level and it will be an invaluable learning curve for the players to play against three strong teams who play different systems.”
“Getting the players accustomed to playing in mini-groups is an important lesson for when they graduate to Sean McCaffrey’s U17 teams as this is the format for the UEFA Championship qualifiers, the 18 players in the squad will all play a substantial part in this tournament, I think that the performances for all of these players will be far more important than the results." added Butler.
