The Republic of Ireland home-based Under-18s take on Wales this evening at Ferrycarrig Park in Wexford (7.30pm).
It may seem a long way off but the ultimate international goal for these players is inclusion in the Ireland Under-19 squad which competes in the 2012/2013 UEFA qualifiers this October.
Under-19 Head Coach Paul Doolin, also in charge of the Under-18s, will lead his team to the qualification group that includes the hosts Luxembourg, top seeds Germany and Macedonia chasing one of the top berths into the elite phase.
"This will be a good opportunity for the lads to impress because we have seen over the years that there are always late developers coming into the international set-up," said Doolin.
"The squad was selected from the Interprovincial series which I attended in the Midlands last October. I am looking forward to seeing how the lads perform at this level."
