REPUBLIC of Ireland U19 team head coach Paul Doolin is looking forward to finishing off a positive training week with his squad when they meet a Gibraltar XI at Victoria Stadium tomorrow night.
The Irish squad trained in Malaga this week in preparation for the UEFA U19 Championships Elite Qualifying Round which takes place In June. Ireland will travel to Serbia to meet the hosts, Switzerland and Slovakia with the winners progressing to the finals in Lithuania in July.
“I feel this has been a very productive week,” said Doolin.
“All of the players have come in and worked hard. The pace of the sessions has been good and with the warm weather it gives you the opportunity to work on things on the training ground that you can’t do in the wind and rain at home.
“I have to say that the clubs have been great in Ireland and abroad allowing us access to the players and the players have shown an appetite to take on board what we’re trying to get across to them.”
Spanish based duo Carel Tiofack of Cadiz CF and Paul Mahony of Elche CF will be amongst a small number of players featuring in the Gibraltar game that haven’t played under Doolin before.
“Their attitude has been first class. Carel knew the lads from having played alongside them at U17 level in the past but it was new for Paul but he’s coped well,” said Doolin.
“Gibraltar will provide a good test. Their trying to prove their deserve to have UEFA status and they’ve beaten Portsmouth, Bradford City and the Faroe Islands full team in recent times.”
