McCaffrey names squad for England clash
Republic of Ireland Under 19 manager Sean McCaffrey has named an 18-man squad for the friendly clash with England at Turner’s Cross, Cork, on Thursday September 9 (Kick off 7:30)
The game is part of Ireland’s preparations for the UEFA Under 19 Championship first phase qualifiers in October when Ireland travel to Cyprus to face the Cypriots, Andorra and Russia.
With two teams to progress, Ireland will be confident of qualification for the second phase and the England clash in Cork is a key part of McCaffrey’s preparations.
“It’s a very important part of preparation,” said McCaffrey. “There is a lot of promise in the current crop and plenty of them are already experienced internationals.
“England are a very good side with a number of players who have first team experience with their clubs and I’m sure that it will be a great game when we meet.”
McCaffrey has selected a strong squad including a number of players who have played Under 19 football last season such as Darren Randolph, Marcos Painter, Under 21 international Patrick Cregg and Joe O’Brien who has recently broken into the Bolton Wanderers first team squad.
Also included is Cork man Ipswich Town striker Billy Clarke who has been in sensational form for Ireland already this season at Under 18 level.
The England squad for the match boasts several players who have already made the first team break through such as Norwich City striker Ian Henderson while also included is Middlesbrough youth team captain Gary Liddle who previously played for Ireland at Under 18 level.
