Mattie Clarke played for Shamrock Rovers F.C. as a defender.Clarke joined originally as a forward but was converted to a defender. Clarke spent 12 years at Rovers winning the Cup on 4 occasions having appeared in 5 cup finals. The only occasion he did not wina winners medal was in 1946 when he captained the Rovers team.

He won his one and only senior cap for the Republic of Ireland national football team on 10th May 1950 in a 5-1 defeat to Belgium in Brussels.

In the 1950/51 season Mattie was awarded a testimonial for his eleven years service at Milltown.

He won his final cup Medal in 1952 when he led Dundalk to victory aftera replay- he had transferred in 1951 -
