Martin Colfer started his career with St James Gate. From there he transferred to Shelbourne where he became Shels top scorer.

At the top of his peak he was selected to represent Ireland and was part of the team that was beaten 5-1 by Belgium.

He was capped a second time in the 3-2 win over Norway

Colfer appeared in two losing cup finals for Shels paling in the cup Final defeat to Dundalk lost 3-0 in 1949 and again in1951 against Cork Athletic which Shels lost in a replay by the only goal.

He won a League Medal in 1952/1953 with Shelbourne
