Match 6

The Irish Times reported
“Free State defence holds out under heavy pressure”

The game was delayed as the huge crowd was put in good humour by a display of athletics and Rugby between Paris and Barcelona.

A cloudy day with a stiff breeze blowing across the ground met the Irish as they entered the frey.

The Spanish made several changes to the side that had recently held Italy to a goaless draw. Eight Catalans were in the team with Zamora the darling of Barcelona.

Spain won the toss and Moore kicked off for Ireland. Spain had the advantage of the breeze and immediately attacked resulting in a corner which proved fruitless. Spain struck the upright to the dismay of the partisan crowd.

Spain were unlucky again when Peira hit a shot across he face if the Irish goal only to see it come back off the crossbar.

Ireland took the lead with ten minutes of the first half remaining as Flood centred for Moore who controlled the cross and scored with a fine high shot.

The lead lasted only 3 minutes as Spain drew level when following a scramble in the Irish defence allowed Arocha to pounce for the equaliser.

Light drizzle arrived during the interval and the second half saw both teams having chances with Moore’s shot being the best opportunity for Ireland.

Farquharson was as cool as ever in the Irish goal, Dowdall, Moore and Reid participated in promising attacks but the Spanish defence held firm.
