West Germany as World Champions played like champions and should have won by a bigger margin.
The German papers lauded the goalkeeping display of O'Neill, the "Big Stopper" Martin and the technical skill of Fitzsimons"
Germany had excellent playes in "wing halves" Schlienz the one armed German right half and Mai.
Germany went in front after 14 minutes through Waldner and increased their lead after 62 minutes with a goal by Mai.
Ireland pulled a goal back through a Sean Fallon scrambled effort in the 67th minute.
Ireland had an opportnity in the dying minutes to get an undeserved equaliser but a fine tackle by Schlienz prevented Cummins from scoring.
The papers at the time were lamenting the fact that the dropped O'Farrell was sorely missed and had O'Farrell been brought on at half time that we could have won the game.
