Moldova 1-1 Republic of Ireland
THE Republic of Ireland Women's U19 side were held to a surprise 1-1 draw with Moldova in their second UEFA WU19 Championships qualifying round group game in in Kristianstad, Sweden.
Ireland must know look for a victory in their final group game against the Swedes on Thursday as it may determine their aspirations of reaching the next stage of qualifying. The 11 group winners and ten best runners-up progress to join three top seeds Germany, England and France in the next round.
Dave Connell's side created 32 scoring opportunities to four from the Moldovans but unfortunately for the Irish they never added to Megan Connolly's opener in the eighth minute.
Viorica Tonu levelled matters with three minutes left when she raced onto a through ball and slotted past keeper Caoimhe O'Reilly. The Moldovans had Nadejda Colesnicenco dismissed for second yellow in injury-time but it mattered little as the final whistle blew soon after.
“The way the game went turned out as we expected. We had a lot of possession but we missed a lot of chances," said Connell. "We hit the crossbar and post twice. We didn’t use our possession wisely.
"We were hoping to do better. We paid the penalty and got caught by a ball over the top. We’re disappointed with the result. The girls are too. We have hard job to do against Sweden now.
“We are missing a few experienced characters from last season who scored goals but we have to work with what we have and we did enough to win it. It is not a question of a lack of creating chances. We even had one where Megan Connolly went around the keeper and her own player got in the way.
“It’s a poor result as far as I’m concerned but we need to get back on the training ground and prepare for next game. We have to go out and try and win it. We have to put the disappointment behind us."
Captain Savannah McCarthy will bid to return from injury for the meeting with group leaders Sweden.
