Match report | Preview
THE Republic of Ireland Women's 19 side got off to a winning start in their opening game in the UEFA WU19 Championships qualifying round against Montenegro in Sweden today.

Dave Connell's side ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a pair of headed goals from Rebekah Carroll and a Megan Connolly penalty.

Carroll came on as substitute for the injured Savannah McCarthy after 18 minutes then headed home from two dead-ball deliveries. Carroll was only on the pitch three minutes when she connected with a Connolly free-kick and steered home with her head.

Connolly then fired home from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute after Aisling Frawley was fouled in the penalty area by Dijana Miljanić.

Carroll added her second goal in the 55th minute when she connected with a Connolly corner to find the net and seal the victory.

"Rebekah came did great to score from the two set-pieces with headers and she came close to getting a hat-trick," said Connell.

"I'm delighted with the winning start. We played well and had a lot of possession and could have scored more goals. The only real downer on the game was that we didn’t score more.

"Montenegro had just one shot and we kept clean sheet so that was a good indicator of how well we did. All of our goals came from set-plays but we were good overall and we're looking forward to our next game against Moldova on Monday.

"It was probably a combination of poor shooting and being a bit rushed but it’s our first competitive game with this year's squad so pleased with the result and score-line.

"Moldova also lost 3-0 to Sweden today. We'll look at the DVD of that and see how it goes. Savannah McCarthy has to be a doubt for the rest of the tournament. It was an innocuous challenge but she had to go off. We'll assess it over next few days."
