Women's Under-19 UEFA elite stage qualifier

Republic of Ireland 0-2 Switzerland

Any hope the Republic of Ireland Under-19 women had of reaching this July's European Championships were dashed on Monday when they lost for the second time at the UEFA elite stage qualifiers in Serbia.

Nothing less than three points against Switzerland would suffice to revive Ireland's prospects of emerging from the four-nation elite group after suffering a 2-0 defeat to the hosts Serbia at the weekend.

Wexford striker Rianna Jarrett, one of three changes to the Irish team, clipped the post with a shot on six minutes as Dave Connell's side too control early on.

Though they pressed up front, Ireland became vulnerable to a counter-attack and, on 41 minutes, they conceded to Eseosa Aigbogun's strike.

Emma Hansberry shot wide on the hour as the Irish sought an equaliser and Jarrett has the ball in the net in the 78th minute only for the referee to disallow the effort for an alleged push on the goalkeeper.

Swiss playmaker Mirjine Selimi punished Ireland with a second goal six minutes from time.

Ireland still have one game left, against Denmark on Thursday, as they aim to complete their campaign on a high after a pair of disappointing results.

"I was happy with the performance, much more so than Saturday's display, but we didn't get the rub of the green," said Ireland manager Dave Connell.

"We had far more chances than both Serbia and Switzerland over the two games but weren't clinical enough with them.

"In the second half, the girls had the majority of possession and were unlucky not to have an equaliser as there seemed no foul on the goalkeeper when Rianna headed the ball into the net.

"There were some excellent performances and we've a lot to be positive about."
