The Republic of Ireland women’s U17s squad have won this year’s international Carrickfergus Cup in Carrickfergus.

The competition saw Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland U17s women’s teams take part in a double-header competition with the aggregate scores deciding the winners of the competition.

Ireland were comfortable 6-2 winners on Monday evening with goals coming from Jessica Gargan, Meagan Connolly, Roma McLaughlin, Sarah Jane McDonald and two goals from Evergreen's Jenny Clifford.

Republic of Ireland line-up in the first game was:

Brooke Dunne, Jamie Finn, Nicole Gordon, Savannah McCarthy, Keeva Keenan, Hayley Nolan, Roma McLaughlin, Jessica Nolan, Sarah Jane McDonald, Meagan Connolly, Jessica Gargan.

The second game saw manager Dave Connell make five changes to the team that beat Northern Ireland so conformably in the first leg on the Monday evening.

Ireland once again were wordy winners coming out on top 2-0 and winning the competition 8-2 on aggregate. Meagan Connolly scored her second goal of the competition with a delightful chip over the advancing Northern Ireland goalkeeper and Sarah Jane McDonald also scored her second goal of the competition scoring from close range following a corner from Connolly.

The two victories by the Women’s U17s team sets them up nicely for the upcoming UEFA championships which take place in Russia from August 6th – 11th when Bosnia Herzegovina, Turkey and Russia will provide the opposition at this year’s competition.
