UEFA Championship Under-17 Women's elite stage qualifier

France 4-0 Republic of Ireland

The Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 team conceded four goals in the last 25 minutes to France in today's opening UEFA elite stage qualifier played at the Briskebyen Stadium in Oslo.

Top seeds in the group France were being contained by the Irish for most of the game until the breakthrough goal arrived on 56 minutes. The French scored twice more during the next ten minutes and notched a fourth in stoppage time.

With only the top team from the four-nation group progressing to the finals in Nyon, Ireland face an uphill struggle to finish above the French.

They must concentrate on winning their next game which is on Wednesday against mini-group hosts Norway, who beat Poland 1-0 in today's other Group 2 fixture.

France had five members of their squad which finished runners-up in last season's European Championship amongst their selection today.

Attempting to shackle such a top-quality outfit was fraught with danger but Ireland coped well and might have even been ahead at the break had Claire Shine been able to get more power on his close-range shot which was easily saved.

The French dominated possession and stepped up the tempo after the interval in search of the lead goal.

It came from their captain Sandie Toletti, who gave Ireland goalkeeper Jill Maloney no chance with a 30 yard shot.

Within moments of conceding that opener, Ireland almost levelled when an attempted clearance by French goalkeeper Romane Bruneau rebounded off Amber Barrett and the ball ran loose. Bruneau recovered well to cover back and prevent the Irish striker from tapping home.

Just past the hour, the advantage was doubled by France. Toletti swung in a corner and centre-back Griedge Bathy Nka was there to volley past the Ireland goalkeeper.

Substitute Alexandra Atamanuik made it 3-0 on 66 minutes with an expertly-executed drive and the clinical French collected a late, late goal when Lea Declercq popped up to tap in the fourth.
