UEFA U19 women's championship first phase qualifiers Russia 3-0 Republic of Ireland Pozdeeva 4 Veselukha 70, 74
Sue Ronan's last game as Manager of Under 19's
Russia sent the Republic of Ireland crashing out of the Women's Under-19 UEFA qualifiers at the first phase with a three goal victory in Osijek, Croatia on Thursday.
A narrow 1-0 defeat to Croatia on Monday left Sue Ronan's Irish girls requiring a win over a powerful Russia side to redeem their qualification ambitions but it wasn't to be as Veselukha scored twice in the space of four second half minutes to kill off Ireland.
With nothing less than a victory sufficient in this concluding qualifier, Ireland needed to be clinical but instead found themselves chasing the game after conceding just four minutes in through Pozdeeva.
Ireland's dynamic duo from their 5-0 hammering of Cyprus in Saturday's opener, Michelle O'Reilly and Rosie Maguire, went at the Russia defence as the game progressed with O'Reilly firing wide and Maguire testing goalkeeper Margarita Shirokova. Nicole Cronin of Aisling Annacotty also went close with an effort which an effort on 37 minutes.
Becky Walsh set up Maguire to strike three minutes into the second half only for Shirokova to save while Laura Chambers saw her shot drift marginally off-target.
But Russia always carried a threat on the counter attack and midfielder Veselukha put the game beyond Ireland by making it 2-0 with twenty minutes remaining.
The same player rubbed salt into the Irish wounds by repeating the trick four minutes later, her goal from a free-kick taking her tally to four in two matches.
Orla Devaney might have netted a consolation for Ireland in stoppage time but it would have mattered little in the grand scheme as Russia and Croatia proceed to the elite phase as the two qualifiers from the four nation group.
