Susan Ronan's Republic of Ireland were defeated 4-0 by Sweden in their final UEFA Championship, elite qualifying phase which ended their dreams of progressing to this years finals in Macedonia.
Sweden took the lead in the 10th minute through midfielder Olivia Schough and they doubled their advantage with a penalty through Tilda Heimersson just before half time in the 44th minute. Sweden's Kristin Carlsson and Emelie Erlandsson secured the victory in close succession in the 49th and 51st minute respectively.
The Republic of Ireland were chasing a place in the UEFA Championship finals as best runner-up following their previous defeat to England on the opening day of the group 1 qualifiers which was followed up with a 3-2 victory against Turkey.
The young Republic of Ireland side will now start their preparation for the 2011 UEFA Championship which will kick-off next September in Croatia. The first qualifying stage will see the young ‘Girls in Girls' will face Cyprus, Croatia and Russia for a place in the elite qualifying for the finals which will be held in Italy in 2011.
In today's other game, England ran out 3-0 winners over Turkey which guaranteed them their place in the UEFA Championship finals.
