UEFA Under-17 Women's First Phase Qualifier Republic of Ireland 0-2 Czech Republic Danihelková 54' E. Šturmová 72'
Ireland's hopes of reaching their second UEFA Championship final appearance in succession looks to have been dashed by a strong Czech Republic outfit in Lurgan this evening (Thursday) as the Czechs ran out 2-0 winners over Harry Kenny's side in a tightly contested battle.
Two second half goals for the Czech Republic from Danihelková and Šturmová ensures that they advance to the elite qualifying phase of the competition ahead of the Republic of Ireland who had previously beaten neighbours, Northern Ireland and Macedonia before today's game. That defeat confirms the Czech Republic as Group 2 winners with nine points while it also dashes Irelands hopes of securing one of the six available best runner's up slots to advance to the next round.
Ireland, full of confidence from their previous two victories over Northern Ireland and Macedonia started the stronger of both sides and within the opening three minutes, they had opportunities to take the lead through Denise O'Sullivan, Rianna Jarrett and Claire Shine.
In a closely contested first-half battle, the Czech Republic then tested Irish keeper, Jill Maloney a number of times in the first half but the American stopper was on-hand to keep her opponents at bay until half-time.
The game was turned on its head in the 53rd minute when the Czech Republic were awarded a free-kick just outside the box which was swung in by Nováková and Danihelková was well positioned in the box to knock it past Jill Moloney in the Irish goal.
The Czechs ensured the victory in the 72nd minute through Šturmová which resigned Ireland to their first defeat of the competition but a defeat which has all but knocked them out of the 2010/11 UEFA Championship.
