England Women's U17 0 - 1 Ireland Women's U17 Jennifer Byrne 30
The World Cup-bound Republic of Ireland Women's Under-17 squad got the better of England today in a friendly played at Trafford FC in Manchester.
Jennifer Byrne supplied the only goal of the game on the half hour mark when she timed her run to perfection to meet Siobhan Killeen's free kick and head the ball beyond the goalkeeper. The Irish will remain in Manchester to face Denmark on Friday in another friendly match.
This Republic of Ireland squad created history earlier this year by becoming the first FAI women's panel to qualify for a major Championship when they reached the UEFA Under-17 finals.
They defeated Germany in the semi-final in June and only missed out on the European trophy following a penalty shoot-out against Spain.
By finishing amongst the top three in Europe, Noel King's squad sealed a place at next month's Women's World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago. Ireland open their campaign against Brazil on September 6. |
