The Republic of Ireland got their season off to a fantastic start with a resounding victory over Poland at Tolka Park.

Ireland withstood some early pressure from their visitors but, that apart, they controlled the match fully.

Sue Ronan’s side are preparing for the upcoming first phase of the UEFA Championship qualifying series in Slovakia from September 27th – October 2nd. They meet Switzerland, Bulgaria hosts Slovakia looking to seal one of the two qualifying positions available from the mini-group into the second, Elite phase of the series.

They face Poland again on Sunday and have another double-header arranged against Wales on September 4th and 6th before the competitive series gets underway.

Ireland grabbed the advantage after 25 minutes following a wicked free-kick by Stephanie Roche. The Stella Maris striker blasted the free from 25-yards off the crossbar and from the rebound, Louise Quinn followed up to drill the ball low into the net from ten yards.

Julienne Russell looked particularly impressive down the left wing in the opening 45 minutes and she set up Ireland’s second goal with 29 minutes gone. Her corner-kick from the left made its way to the back post where Aine O’Gorman was lurking and the Senior International spotted a gap at the near post to find the back of the net despite the best efforts of a Polish defender on the line.

With central-midfielders Lynn-Marie Grant and Gillian McDonnell carving out opportunities aplenty for Ireland in the second half, it was only a matter of time before they extended the lead.

Substitute Kara Mullins made a massive impact after coming on, scoring Ireland’s third 15 minutes from the end with a clinical finish and hitting the crossbar with a thunderous shot a minute later.

Gillian McDonald capped a fine performance by making it 4-0 after 79 minutes. Some defensive hesitancy in the Polish ranks allowed the midfielder seize the opening and stroke the ball home.
