Match report
Republic of Ireland 0-2 Switzerland

Switzerland got the better of the Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-19 team with a goal in either half when the teams met today (Sunday) at Tolka Rovers FC.

Ana Maria Crnogorcevic and Danique Stein were the goal-scorers as the Swiss followed up their 3-1 win on Sunday with another accomplished performance.

The Republic of Ireland enjoyed lots of possession and were unlucky not to draw level in the first-half through Gillian McDonnell’s shot which rattled the underside of the crossbar.

Susan Ronan’s Irish side will travel to Germany for the UEFA Championship elite qualifying phase to be held from the 23rd -28th April where they will face Russia, Slovakia and European superpower, Germany, with the aim of securing the sole place from the group available at the finals.

Ireland battled from the start, chasing a confidence-boosting win ahead of their assignment in Germany, and had the Switzerland defence troubled with a series of long thrown-ins hurled into the penalty area by Megan Campbell.

Once they weathered that threat, the visitors began to make their pace in attack count and they took the lead in the 33rd minute with the move of the match.

Samira Susuri and Selina Kuster were involved in the build-up which began near the half-way line and, after a string of passes carved open the defence, Ana Maria Crnogorcevic made no mistake from ten yards with a first-time shot that rose high into the net.

Ireland hit back immediately and thought they had levelled within a minute. Zoe Doherty’s effort brought the best out of Pascale Kuffer in the Swiss goal but the alert McDonnell followed up to smash a shot which, unluckily for her, struck the underside of the crossbar and bounced back into play.

Louise Quinn, Ireland’s captain, came to the rescue on the stroke of half-time when she raced back onto the line to head the ball over for a corner after Danique Stein’s free-kick had beaten Sinead Crotty.

Stein would not be denied 15 minutes into the second half from a similar set-piece when she lofted a long free-kick in from the left which Crotty got a hand to but couldn’t prevent the ball nestling into the net.
