Republic of Ireland 0-2 Netherlands
The game started with high intensity with both sides swapping large periods of sustained pressure without any threat in their opponents final third.
The first real chance of the game came in the 29th minute when Noelle Murray played a cutting through ball to Amy Ryan who latched onto the ball from 20 yards out but Angela Christ in the Dutch goal saved comfortably.
The Netherlands almost got the opening goal after 31 minutes. Right winger, Slegers drifted in a teasing cross to striker, Ridder who headed over from ten yards.
The Dutch took the lead on the stroke of half time, Ridder found space at the edge of the box and she cleverly skipped by Irish centre half, Louise Quinn and she struck the ball underneath the diving Lynn Bradley in the Irish goal.
After 53 minutes, the Netherlands should have doubled their lead as Larissa Wigger ran through onto a high ball from the midfield and she found herself through on goal but she blazed over from 15 yards out.
Irish goalkeeper, Lynn Bradley came to the rescue on the hour mark as she palmed away a strong header from Tessa Oudejans.
The Irish were 2-0 down after 63 minutes, Elisabeth De Vries crossed into the box from the right and Ridder was on hand to volley in off the crossbar from six yards out giving Bradley no chance in goal.
Ronan's side will feel aggrieved that they did not grab a goal back late on after Aine O'Gorman slotted the ball into the net from close range but was adjudged offside by the Swedish official.
The Irish will now face Serbia in the second elite phase qualifying fixture as they bid to get their qualification hopes back on track. Only the winner of the four nation group will advance to the eight team UEFA Championships Finals to be held in France this summer.
