Republic of Ireland 2 – 0 Russia
Goals from Stephanie Roche and Amy Ryan were enough to secure Susan Ronan's Republic of Ireland side victory in a closely fought battle at Frank Cooke Park this evening (Friday) as Ireland advanced their preparations for the upcoming series in the second elite qualifying phase of the UEFA Championship.
The Republic of Ireland came into today's game on the back of an 8-0 victory against Iceland last month and it didn't take long for the Irish to settle as they dominated proceedings early on. Raheny United playmaker, Noelle Murray almost scored after 15 minutes with an audacious effort.
She hit the bar from a 20 yard free-kick effort on the left wing and the ball went out of play much to the relief of Elena Kochneva in the Russian goal.
Dundalk City striker, Stephanie Roche opened the scoring after 25 minutes. A corner on the left was swung in by Noelle Murray and Roche evaded her marker and headed the ball into the back of the net.
Russia almost equalised on the hour mark, substitute, Ploskonenko charged through the Irish defence but she fired to the right of Lynn Bradley's goal.
Stella Maris defender, Susan Hackett almost added a second after 65 minutes, Dundalk's Grace Murray flighted a cross from a corner into the box and Hackett rose above the defenders but her powerful header was straight at Kochneva in the Russian goal.
With just seven minutes remaining, Amy Ryan secured the victory for the Irish, Kochneva spilled a low shot in the box and the ball fell to Ryan who blasted the ball past the helpless keeper. Ryan was adding to her goal tally for the Republic of Ireland under 19 side after she scored a hat-trick against Iceland in Home Farm last month.
The Irish will face Russia in the second game of this double international friendly on Sunday, April 13th at Whitehall in Dublin at 12 pm. It will be the final warm-up for Ireland ahead of the UEFA Elite Qualifying Phase which takes place in Madrid, Spain from the 24th-29th April.
Susan Ronan's side will face the Netherlands, Spain and Serbia as they bid to qualify for their very first UEFA Championship finals.
