Iceland secured victory through a first half penalty which defender Gunnlaugsdottir slotted past Lynn Bradley in the Irish goal.
The Irish started the game brightly and dominated possession for large periods of the first half in their opponents half.
It was Iceland who had the first real chance of the game however, Icelandic striker stole a march on her marker and she burst through the penalty area as she latched on to a through ball but Lynn Bradley in the Irish goal was quick off her line and she diverted the danger.
The Girls in Green had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring after 23 minutes, Stephanie Roche controlled a long throw-in from the left wing and she squared to Irish captain, Aine O'Gorman in the six yard box but Gunnarsdottir in the Icelandic goal was quick out and pounced at O'Gorman's feet just as she pulled the trigger.
Three minutes later, O'Gorman had another chance to open the scoring, Noelle Murray provided a deep cross into the box and the Stella Maris player did well to get her head to the ball which just flew over the bar.
With five minutes to play before half-time, Iceland broke quickly from their own half and Ingvarsdottir raced towards the Irish goal, in an attempt to tackle the on-rushing player, Jadine Madden and Noelle Murray collided and they brought the midfielder down in the box, causing an injury to Madden in the process.
Icelandic defender, Gunnlaugsdottir stepped up to take the spot-kick and she buried it past Bradley into the bottom right-hand corner.
The Irish side managed by Sue Ronan started the second half with great intensity as they pushed forward in search of the equaliser. Iceland defended in numbers as they soaked up the Irish attacking play and looked to counter-attack as they looked to put the game beyond the Irish.
Julie-Ann Russell came close for the Irish after 68 minutes, a breaking ball from the Iceland penalty area came to Russell who was at the edge of the box, half-volleyed and her effort whizzed past the right-hand post, much to the relief of the stranded keeper.
Iceland should have doubled their lead towards the end as midfielder, Gunnarsdottir ran on to a through-ball but her effort was screwed to the right of Bradley's goal.
The Irish will have an opportunity to avenge today's defeat to Iceland as the two sides meet again on Sunday afternoon at 12pm at Home Farm FC, Dublin.
