Republic of Ireland 2 - 1 Russia Yvonne Cahill 32 Deirdre Duke 40
Ireland’s Under-15 Women’s team showed true character to recover from conceding an early goal and etch out a well-deserved victory against Russia in the opening game of their tour of Germany.
Russia were quick out of the blocks in Lünen, firing the first goal on six minutes but the rest of the game belonged to Ireland as they dazzled their opponents with some beautiful football.
Yvonne Cahill squared the game up with an equaliser for Ireland just past the half hour stage and eight minutes later, Deirdre Duke maintained her terrific goal-scoring record with another crucial goal.
Duke had netted the vital winner against Belgium earlier this season and was again in the right place to deliver the decisive goal and claim a heartening result for the Irish.
The Irish are part of the prestigious tournament held in Germany where they are taking on three of Europe’s leading nations.
Hosts Germany provide the next opposition for Ireland on Wednesday (6.30pm, local time) before they meet Denmark on Friday morning (9.45am, local time).
The bulk of this played for the Irish Schools selection which recorded back-to-back wins away to Belgium in May of this year. They also captured the Celtic Nations Bob Doherty Cup by defeating hosts Wales 3-0 in Wrexham.
