PAUL DOOLIN'S home-based Republic of Ireland U18 side beat Wales 3-2 in a thrilling encounter at Ozier Park today.
The Irish produced an impressive display despite the heavy underfoot conditions and took the lead on 11 minutes. Sligo Rovers' Liam Flatley did well to set up Bray Wanderers striker Ryan Swan and he fired past visiting goalkeeper Conah McFenton with a crisp shot from just inside the penalty area.
The hosts increased their lead on 38 minutes when the Finn Harps pair of Joe McIntyre and Darragh Black combined. McIntyre played a corner kick from the right to Black and he curled the ball into the rook of the net with his left foot from just outside the penalty area.
Wales got back into the game from the penalty spot on 51 minutes. A weak back pass by defender Christopher Flanagan allowed Peter Jones a run on goal and the Irish goalkeeper Patrick Dunican was forced to take down the Welsh striker. Ryan Wyn Jones duly dispatched the spot kick with ease.
The visitors levelled matters on the hour mark after Harri Jones crossed from the left and Aaron Hassall finished in style running in from the right side of the pitch for an excellent goal.
Ireland finished strongly with Liam Flately again turning playmaker as he set up Jack Bayly on 82 minutes but substitute goalkeeper Ryan Edkins produced a fine save with his legs. Joe McIntyre then had a rocket of a shot saved by Ryan Edkins.
Three minutes into stoppage time Ireland popped up with the winning goal. Bayly's corner kick from the left landed at the feet of Dylan Hegarty and the Swilly Rovers defender fired home from close range. It was a dramatic finish to the first ever international game to be played at the famous old Waterford ground, Ozier Park.
Interestingly, it is believed that Zyaac and Noah Edwards became the first ever twin brothers to play international football for Wales in this game.
