Match abandoned at HT due to floodlight failure
Over a thousand supporters crammed into Tramore's Gruan Park to cheer on Paul Doolin's Under 18 side against Wales with locals Matthew Connor in goal and Maurice Shanahan at right back.
Although they were rewarded with an exciting first half which saw Ireland go three goals clear of the Welsh, the match had to be abandoned due to floodlight failure during half time.
Doolin had made a full 11 changes to the team that beat the visitors 3-2 the day before in Ozier Park but they looked completely assured from the start with good combination play deep in the Welsh half, signalling an early opener that duly came just 13 minutes from kick off.
UCD's Daryl Kavanagh sent Shelbourne's Aaron Robinson off at pace down the left wing who cut back cleverly from the goal-line to find an unmarked Shane Walsh on the edge of the box. Walsh didn't waste the opportunity, striking low into the corner to take the lead. A second goal followed just five minutes later when Wexford Youths' Daryl Power got on the end of a low cross from Ross Mann and coolly spun two defenders to fire home from 6 yards. Welsh goalkeeper, Ryan Edkins suffered a suspected tibia break in the scramble and was substituted by Conagh McFenton.
Ross Mann from Limerick was again involved for Ireland's third goal after he chest trapped a long pass and fired his shot neatly past a helpless McFenton. Sadly, the game had to be abandoned at half time due to floodlight failure which was finally fixed 46 minutes after the second half had been due to start - too late for the match to continue.
