The Republic of Ireland lost the second of this week's two friendly matches against the Netherlands when they went down 3-0 in today's game in Doorwerth.
The home side got off to the perfect start when Nazario de Fretes of Sparta Rotterdam opened the scoring after seven minutes when he pounced on a clearance from a corner and hit a low shot to the bottom corner.
Ireland's Warren O'Horan almost equalised three minutes later but his header was well saved by Dutch keeper Bilal Bayazit while at the other end Ian Giltenan saved well from Tahith Chong and watched other efforts from Chong and Orhan Dag miss the target.
However, there was little he could do in the 31st minute when a through ball by Ugur Altintas sent Dag clear and the Sparta Rotterdam player made no mistake with a low drive to the keeper's left to make it 2-0.
Ireland's Shane Stokes almost pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time when he brushed himself down after winning a free-kick and hit a beautiful strike from 25 yards that was matched by keeper Bayazit.
Ireland's hopes of getting back into the game after half-time were dealt a massive blow three minutes into the second-half when Joel Piroe's shot's was blocked and de Fretes tucked away the rebound from close range.
However, despite being three down, the Irish continued to plug away and Evan Murphy almost pulled a goal back 12 minutes from time when his shot from the edge of the box was saved by the Dutch keeper.
Holland almost added a fourth in the dying minutes of the game when substitute Leandrom Fernandes beat the offside trap and produced an sublime looping header which was tipped over the crossbar at full stretch by the impressive Giltenan.
After the game Ireland manager Colin O'Brien said the trip had been a very worthwhile exercise despite the results. O'Brien said: "The players got a chance over these two games to see what international football is all about and met a very good, technical team. They saw today that you can't afford to give goal-scoring chances to players at this level because you will get punished. It's been a very productive week and the players will benefit from this experience over the next few years."
