Wales 1-1 Republic of Ireland

Holders Republic of Ireland retained their Pembrokeshire Cup following todays (Sunday) drawn game against Wales in Neath.

Ireland won this fixture between the nations twelve months ago in Dublin and looked on course for another victory as they took a comfortable lead into the break courtesy of Kealon Dillons opener after 20 minutes.

But a resurgent Wales side controlled possession for large periods of the second half and struck an equaliser five minutes after the restart.

Ireland manager John Morling was pleased with his sides performance in their first international game of the season whilst admitting there is room for improvement in some aspects of their play.

The Irish were the better side early on, dealing well with the wet conditions, and sped into the lead midway through the half. Excellent approach play by Michael Drennan on the left-wing set up the opening, as his cross allowed Kealon Dillon to convert with aplomb.

In other first-half chances for Ireland, Luke Gallagher headed over from a good position and Steven Smith was narrowly off-target with a drive from 30 yards.

Wales came more into the contest in the second half and caught their visitors out five minutes in with a clever move that led to substitute goalkeeper Ian Lawlor being beaten with a well-executed finish.

Ireland pressed for a winner late on and striker Ken McEvoy was close to supplying it after he raced away on a dribble from his own half that whisked him past two defenders and around the goalkeeper. However, the Welsh full-back rushed back to clear the strikers effort off the line.

Ireland are next in action with double-header in Malta on September 10 and 12 and another set of games against Denmark away on October 13 and 15. They host Czech Republic at the end of November.

John Morling said afterwards: "We played very well in parts and created some good chances but a draw was probably a fair result. All 16 players got to feature for a good portion of the 90 minutes and there was a lot of positives to take out as we look towards the double-header coming up in two weeks time in Malta."
