Match report
Republic of Ireland U16 manager, John Morling has hailed his sides performances in a double international friendly against Malta's U17 team at the weekend.

Morling's side humbled their hosts in the first game with a 4-0 victory with goals courtesy of Carel Tiofack, Mark Timlin, Jack Nardiello and Joe O'Brien. The second game was far more competitive from an Irish view point as Leicester City striker, Nardiello was once again on target after he nodded home from a Kenneth McEvoy cross after 11th minutes and the Irish held on to restore their unbeaten start to the season.

In his maiden season as Republic of Ireland U16 manager, John Morling said, "Obviously to win both games away from home with five unanswered goals is a huge bonus but I was genuinely pleased with the performance of all the players on the trip. We have worked really hard in training and they put a lot of effort into the games against players who are playing a year above their level. Incredibly, there was a number of debutants in the squad such as Mark Timlin, Joseph O'Brien, Colm Horgan, Conor O'Donnell and Jack Nardiello from Leicester of whom three managed to open their international goal scoring accounts on their debut which is very pleasing," said the Irish boss.

"While we won't be getting carried away with these results, it is definitely a spring board for the long season ahead. We travel to Denmark for a double international friendly on October 13 and 15 so this will give us a good indication on where we stand as a team. Historically, Denmark are a very strong side at underage level and these games will be great experience for our squad , he added.

On Sunday, even though Nardiello's headed goal in the 13th minute was all that the Irish could come up with in the whole match; the boys in red had most of the possession and with some more luck they should have equalised. Some nifty passes, good possession and fast overlaps were creating some uneasy moments for the visiting team.

As the team settled down our young ones should have been more daring with their shooting especially from outside the box. Matthew Hammet had some dazzling runs in the second half and a couple of dangerous shots from outside the box.
