REPUBLIC OF IRELAND U-15 1-1 BELGIUM U-15

The Republic of Ireland Under-15 showed great character to battle back and claim a 1-1 draw against Belgium in tonights first game of this weeks double-header.

Killarney Celtics home venue, Celtic Park, is hosting the games, the second of which takes place on Thursday (11am), and both teams produced an entertaining contest.

The wet and blustery conditions presented challenges to the players and Ireland started brightest.

Sean Byrne on the left flank was particularly effective and one of his crosses, delivered on five minutes, almost floated into the far corner of the net.

Jesse Devers was next to come close when he controlled Byrnes cross but could not get the ball from under his feet and the chance was lost.

Belgium forged ahead on 12 minutes following a sweeping counter-attack from an Irish corner. A cross from the landed at the feet of captain Youri Tielemans 20 yards out and the Anderlecht midfielder found the top corner with a rising shot.

Devers was near to equalising 18 minutes later after latching onto Jack Tuites through ball on the right only to send his low effort a yard wide.

Next to try his luck was Shane Elworthy, whose volley high towards the top corner forced Quintjin Steelandt to scamper across and gather the ball.

Ireland battled gamely in the second half and drew level from the penalty spot eight minutes from time. Devers was brought down by Nathan Leyder and Irish captain Dan Casey sent Quintjin Steelandt the wrong way.

Six minutes later, Shane Elworthy had a chance to seal win for Ireland when Devers sent him clear but the winger flashed his low drive wide.
