Under-15 Celtic tri-nations tournament Republic of Ireland 2 Northern Ireland 3
The Republic of Ireland Under-15 side were unlucky to lose their opening game of the Celtic tri-nations tournament today (Friday) at the University of Glamorgan when Northern Ireland struck a late winner.
Ireland were guilty of spurning some good chances through Carol Tiofack and Conor Byrne before Northern Ireland opened the scoring on 24 minutes when Douglas Wilson finished well.
John Morlings Irish side continued to create opportunities with Kenny McEvoy and Darren O Donoghue testing goalkeeper Gareth Deane but they were caught on the counter-attack eight minutes before half-time as Aaron Rogan got in to make it 2-0.
Ireland emerged in the as a stronger unit in the second half and deservedly pulled a goal back eight minutes in after Kieran Sadlier of West Ham United marked his International debut with a cool finish.
The dominance enjoyed by Ireland was reflected in the series of attempts on goal they carved out and though Bradley Garmston was denied by the upright, Kenny McEvoty made no mistake in supplying the equaliser on 69 minutes.
But two minutes later, Northern Ireland regained the lead as Shay McCartan scored to seal victory.
In the other game played today, the Republic of Ireland B side played out a 1-1 draw against Northern Ireland. Substitute Darragh Lenihans grabbed Irelands equaliser in the last minute.
During a first half where there was little goalmouth incident, Ryan Coombes was closest to scoring for Ireland when he picked up a great position in the box but mis-controlled the pass and the defence got back to clear.
Northern Ireland took the lead 13 minutes from time as Luke Conlon was afforded too much room to fire home but the Irish showed plenty of character to retrieve the situation.
Jack Doherty and Jamie McGlynn conjured efforts on goal but substitute Darragh Lenihan popped up on the stroke of the full-time with the equaliser, storming through on goal from midfield before slotting the ball home after his first shot was parried by the keeper.
