Republic of Ireland 2-0 Belgium

The Republic of Ireland Under-15s secured second place in the International Midlands Tournament with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Belgium in Athlone.

A goal apiece from Daniel Purdy and Daniel McGuinness handed Vincent Butler’s side second place, after Turkey had earlier claimed overall victory in the tournament with a convincing 3-0 win over Latvia.

Ireland took the lead on 11 minutes when Daniel Purdy’s rasping shot from the edge of the box gave Belgian ‘keeper Salvatore Crimi no chance.

That lead was almost doubled just one minute later. McGuinness chased down Crimi’s attempted clearance but his shot was hacked off the line by Axel Bonsemme.

Ireland continued to press for a second. The trickery of John O’Sullivan, combined with the inter-play of McGuinness and Purdy, caused the visiting defence problems.

Belgium almost stole an equaliser in the earlier stages of the second half. Romelo Lukako played Nats Rits through but his shot went narrowly over McDermott’s bar.

Just one minute later, Ireland doubled their lead. Adam Pigott played McGuinness through and the striker cleverly chipped the on-rushing ‘keeper from all of 25 yards.

Purdy almost made it three just two minutes later. He ran at the defence and twisted and turned, but his shot clipped the defender's foot and deflected wide for a corner.
