Match report

Pictures from the match
The Republic of Ireland were held to a scoreless drew in their first game of the season against Holland this evening at Home Farm's Whitehall ground.

Ireland's best chance to score arrived in first-half injury time when Jean Biansumba's free-kick from 25 yards was tipped over the crossbar by Dutch 'keeper Kelle Ross.

It was one of the few opportunities created during a game which saw both sides enjoy dominant spells.

Ireland began the match stronger and their strike-force of Conor Murphy and Ethan Mannion looked sharp in attack. Mannion tested the visiting 'keeper with a long-range effort from 30 yards after 20 minutes but that was the nearest he came to breaking the deadlock.

Holland came more into the game after the break and had a great opportunity after eight minutes when Ryan Bouwmeester had a free header.

Daniel Joyce gave a sublime pass all of 40 yards from defence to Jean Biansumba but his cross was hit too hard for the inrushing Irish forwards.

Ireland's best piece of football saw Bardy and Skelly interchange passes which led to Eoin Wearen shooting from 30 yards out that went high over the bar.

Holland carved out the clearest opportunity of grabbing a winner late in the game. Substitute Tom Boere was presented with the chance from 12 yards but his shot angled high and wide of the target.

It was an evenly contested game and Ireland manager Vincent Butler will be satisfied with his team's showing in their first outing.

The nations meet again in the rematch on Thursday at 11.30hrs at the same venue.
