Match report
THE Republic of Ireland U17 side showed great determination to bounce back from a four goal deficit to suffer a narrow defeat at the hands of Croatia on Tuesday.

Tom Mohan’s side are preparing for the UEFA U17 Championships Elite Qualifying Round and will have learned a lot from this tie.

Despite having an even share of possession the Irish made a number of defensive errors and were 3-0 down through goals from Ivan Markota after seven minutes, Nikola Moro on 18 minutes and Josip Brekalo on 36 minutes.

Adrian Blečić made it 4-0 to the hosts three minutes into the second half but the Irish showed a lot of spirit to get back into the game although they had tested the home defence several times before Conor Ronan pulled one back in the 53rd minute.

After some decent build-up play from the Irish a Trevor Clarke cross found Ronan at the back post and he steered the ball home.

It was a similar story seven minutes later when Clarke arrived at the back post to knock the ball home from a dangerous cross from Conor Levingston.

Levingston brought the game back to 4-3 with seven minutes left after a lengthy passing sequence ended with Conor Ronan picked out Levingston’s late run and the midfielder found the net with a glancing header.

The Croatia keeper Ivan Nevistić did well to deny Jamie Aherne, Conor Ronan and Trevor Clarke in the dying minutes but the Irish could not force an equaliser.
