Republic of Ireland 5-0 Gibraltar
TOM Mohan’s Republic of Ireland U17 side began their UEFA Championships Qualifying Round with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Gibraltar at Athlone Town Stadium this evening.
The Irish had a let off in the 13th minute when Gibraltar's Byron Espinosa beat keeper Ross Treacy with a rasping drive from 25 yards out that smacked off an upright.
Ten minutes later Zach Elbouzedi thought he had broken the deadlock but his powerful strike whistled narrowly wide of the Gibraltar goal.
West Brom winger Elbouzedi found the net in the 29th minute when he calmly slotted home after great work down the left by substitute Trevor Clarke.
Three minutes later Elbouzedi brilliantly burst down the right flank before cutting the ball back for Jake Doyle Hayes, who saw his powerful shot blocked by a defender.
Ireland went 2-0 up in the 36th minute when Clarke broke through the Gibraltar defence and fired home after a great cross-field ball by Corey O'Keeffe.
Conor Davis steered the ball home from close range after good work by JJ Lunney to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute.
Visiting keeper Bradley Banda made a good stop to deny Clarke in the 62nd minute but two minutes later it was Clarke again who forced his way into the Gibraltar box and drilled home number four.
In the 78th minute Davis had a volleyed effort brilliantly saved by Banda and from the resulting corner from Doyle-hayes, Robbie McCourt headed to the net.
Two minutes into injury-time Davis had a strike from 20 yards pushed to safety by keeper Banda.
Ireland will meet the Faroe Islands in their next group match on Wednesday evening in Galway's Eamon Deacy Park (7.30pm).
