First under 17 match as manager for Tom Mohan

Republic of Ireland U17s 3 Azerbaijan 0

The Republic of Ireland under-17 team ran out comfortable winners of Azerbaijan in a friendly international at Milebush, Castlebar.

New Ireland under-17s boss Tom Mohan was pleased with a workout that saw Jack Byrne, Conor Dimaio and Cody Mulhall all find the net.

Byrne opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 13th minute when the Manchester City youngster won a penalty following a quickly taken corner by Alex O'Hanlon.

Fulham's Dean O'Halloran had a shot saved by keeper Agaseid Gasimov in the 18th minute after good work by Leeds United's Eoghan Stokes in the build-up.

Sheffield United's Dimaio was then denied by the keeper after connecting with an O'Halloran corner in the 40th minute.

Stokes had a header narrowly wide from an O'Halloran cross in the 47th minute before firing just over from the edge of the box in the 54th minute.

Dimaio made it 2-0 in the 61st minute when he produced a powerful strike from just outside the penalty area that took a deflection on the way to the back of the net.

Substitute Cody Mulhall wrapped it up in the 79th minute when the Stella Maris midfielder fired home from ten yards out.

"It was a good night for us. The lads did well and played with a decent style about them considering it is so early in the season," said Mohan, whose side will play in the UEFA Championship qualifiers next month.

"Some of the lads are still adjusting to their first season in full-time football while the home-based players may not have even started their seasons yet.

"We played with a good tempo and it's nice to see us scoring a few goals. I'm well happy. The concentration was good and with the quality of players we have we were always going to get chances to score if we got the base right at the back."

Ireland face the same opposition in another friendly at the same venue on Thursday (12.00 noon). Ireland face Macedonia, Sweden and Romania in the qualifiers from September 29 to October 4.
