German defeat for Irish U17s at UEFA Elite qualifiers

Germany 3 Republic of Ireland 0

THE Republic of Ireland U17 side suffered a 3-0 loss to Germany in the UEFA Championships Elite qualifying round in Serbia this afternoon.

Tom Mohan's side went into the tie looking to record a victory to keep their qualification hopes alive but they suffered an early blow when they conceded a goal in the first minute with Max Besuschkow finding the net.

Shane Elworthy looked to give Ireland and early response and forced a save from German keeper Timo Königsmann in the fourth minute. 60 seconds later Elworthy was just off target with an attempt after connecting with a free-kick delivered by Conor Masterson.

Unfortunately Ireland's hopes of turning the game around shipped a major blow when Arianit Ferati extended the German lead after nine minutes.

Irish keeper Evan Moran then denied Ferati a third German goal in the 12th minute. Ten minutes later a Benjamin Henrichs corner came to Niclas Bahn but his shot was blocked.

Jesse Devers responded for Ireland in the 27th minute with an effort that drew a save from keeper Königsmann but less than a minute later Moran had to make a save from Bahn.

Königsmann was tested by Masterson in the 35th minute as Ireland pushed to grab a goal that would bring them back into the tie.

Germany upped the ante before the break and Moran made further saves to deny Bahn and Besuschkow.

Ireland's chances seemed to fade away when Phillipp Ochs grabbed a third German goal from a counterattack

Neither goalkeeper was troubled for long spells in the second half and Devers threatened a consolation goal in the 75th minute but his effort was blocked.

Moran made another stop from Besuschkow in the 77th minute and then made another impressive save to deny Benedikt Gimber in injury-time after Bahn delivered a corner.

Ireland meet Georgia in their final fixture in Belgrade on Monday (2.00pm Irish).
