Ireland U17s suffer friendly defeat in Slovakia

Slovakia 3 Republic of Ireland 0

THE Republic of Ireland U17 team were unfortunate to lose a friendly international clash with Slovakia 3-0 earlier today.

Tom Mohans side are playing the Slovaks in two U17 friendlies this week but the Irish coach was happy with how his side had fared in the first half in particular.

The Irish had fallen behind in the tenth minute when they conceded an unfortunate own goal but Mohan felt his side had more than dominated the opening period.

"To be honest the only job our keeper James Talbot had to do in the first half was to pick the ball out of the net after the own goal," said Mohan.

"We forced seven corners in the first half, had most of the possession and created plenty of chances but could not find an equaliser unfortunately."

Ipswich Town striker Cemal Ramadan did have the ball in the Slovak net midway through the first half but it was ruled out for a marginal offside decision.

Unfortunately the Irish conceded a second goal seven minutes into the second half when Eric Hric found the net and then the Irish conceded a third goal when Nikolas Špalek had an effort deflected home.

"I have to admit that in the second half we did not play well enough and we were a bit deflated by the goals that we conceded," added Mohan.

"This week is an opportunity to see the players that are in contention for the UEFA qualifiers and how they play in the system - some did well and others have room for improvement.

"We will get ready for our next meeting with Slovakia on Thursday and more players will get their opportunities".

Irelands UEFA U17 Championships qualifying round games are in Armenia when they meet Gibraltar on October 24, the Armenians on October 26 and England on October 29.
