Ireland U17s suffer friendly loss to Slovakia

Slovakia 1 Republic of Ireland 0

THE Republic of Ireland U17 suffered a frustrating 1-0 loss to Slovakia today with head coach Tom Mohan pleased with the battling display.

Slovakia’s lone goal game with a 77th minute penalty that was harsh in the extreme and Adrian Kopičár despatched the spot-kick past Irish keeper Evan Moran with aplomb.

Danny Kane had come inches from putting Ireland in front just two minutes earlier when Danny Kane hit the home post after getting on the end of a free-kick.

"We were unfortunate. We had some great chances to go 1-0 up then conceded a very soft penalty. It was a much improved performances and we will take a lot from it,” said Mohan.

"We had a couple of very good chances and in international football you have to take those chances. The players worked hard and you could not fault anybody. They showed character to get on the ball.

"I was disappointed for the lads but it is about us getting to know the players and for them to see how we work. It would have been nice to win it but the most important thing was to learn as much as we can ahead of the UEFA Championships qualifying tournament in October.”

Tom Holland goal disallowed for offside in the 73rd minute and Ireland also had a number of other chances test the home defence without finding the net.

Najprv Kondrlík came closest for Slovakia in the 13th minute when his effort hit an upright and the rebound was well saved by Moran.

Ireland will travel to Armenia next month where they will meet Gibraltar on October 24, the Armenians on October 26 and England on October 29.
