THE Republic of Ireland U18 side produced a thrilling performance to beat Wales 3-2 at the RSC, Waterford, this afternoon but ultimately lost out on the inaugural John Coughlan Memorial International Cup after a penalty shoot-out.

Jim Crawford's side lost 1-0 when the sides met in Tramore on Monday and things looked difficult when Wales took the lead after 19 minutes today after Jamie Roberts' strike was parried by Irish goalkeeper Sean MacUidhlinn into the path of Lewis Evans, who finished to the net from close range.

Four minutes later Roberts whipped in another dead ball from the left that saw the Irish skipper Troy O’Sullivan rattle his own upright under pressure from the Welsh attack.

Ireland drew level on the day in the 32th minute when Evan Coyne's free kick found the head of Connal Flood and he steered the ball home brilliant to beat keeper Andrew Wycherley.

Three minutes before the break Coyne curled in another dangerous free kick and unfortunately for the visitors Tyler Brock turned the ball into his own net.

Ireland's third goal arrived on the hour when Scott McCarthy found the net with a thumping 30-yard free kick.

Both sides made numerous substitutions and it seemed set to end with the Irish claiming the trophy but with three minutes left Irish sub keeper Craig Dunphy was beaten by a thundering shot by Ifan Jones.

With the tie level 3-3 on aggregate a penalty shoot-out was required. Ifan Jones, Josh Makismovic, Dan Dascalu, Jamie Roberts and Sam Jones all found the net with Ciaran Kearney, Evan Lynch and Conor Walsh all finding the net for Ireland. Unfortunately Jordan O'Regan's spot-kick was stopped by sub keeper Ryan Goldstone and the visitors lifted the cup.
