Match report

Pictures from the match
Republic of Ireland 6-0 Azerbaijan

The Irish started very brightly with Eoghan Stokes causing the first threat in the second minute when he cut in from the left and fired in a low strike that keeper Aghaseyid Gasimov did well to hold.

In the fifth minute Stokes threatened again with a spectacular over-head kick but it landed on the roof of the Azeri net.

Three minutes later Ross Mann had a powerful strike held by the keeper as Ireland continued to push for an opener and in the 16th minute it duly arrived as Dessie Hutchinson fired home with a powerful strike from the edge of the box.

Gasimov then had to reacted smartly to parry another crisp strike from Joel Coustrain in the 23rd minute as a second goal looked on the cards.

However just four minutes later Irish keeper Harry Doherty showed his quality when he made a point blank save to deny Ilkin Sadigov header that appeared to deflect off a defender.

Ireland duly extended their lead when Jamie McGrath's low strike deflected off a defender and beats the keeper from close range.

The second half started with a bang for Ireland with McGrath adding his second goal of the evening with a clever lobbed effort just two minutes after the restart.

Ireland went 4-0 up in the 67th minute when substitute Ryan Manning turned home a header with one of his first touches of the game following a neat left-wing cross from Cieron Keane.

The fifth goal came in the 74th minute when Manning steered the ball home from a Jack Hallahan cross and just 60 seconds later Hallahan converted from a low cross by Joel Coustrain for Ireland's sixth goal.

The two sides will meet again at the same venue on Friday afternoon (3.00pm).
