Republic of Ireland 1-0 Malta

REPUBLIC of Ireland’s U19 side began their UEFA U19 Championships qualifying campaign with a 1-0 victory over Malta at a rain-soaked RSC in Waterford this evening.

Paul Doolin’s side led 1-0 from Eoghan Stokes’ 17th minute opener but despite dominating possession they could not find any further way past impressive Maltese keeper Philipp Schranz.

Stokes turned home from close range after connecting sweetly with a brilliant left wing cross from Ryan Manning.

Malta had threatened an opener just before Stokes scored when a long distance strike by Jurgen Degabriele was well gathered by Irish keeper Liam Bossin.

In the 28th minute a neat shot from Harry Charsley with the outside of his right foot forced a decent save from the Maltese keeper.

Malta threatened again in the 36th minute when Degabriele sent in a low strike from distance that forced a good save from Bossin and while Jake Grech converted the rebound he was flagged offside.

After the break the conditions worsened but Joel Coustrain livened up the crowd in the 53rd minute when he ran the length of the field before firing in a low strike that the Maltese keeper held well.

In the 61st minute another good burst forward by Charsley saw him cut the ball back for Manning but his low strike was saved by Schranz.

Three minutes later Reece Grego-Cox got in on an angle and had a decent strike which was spilled by the keeper but Schranz pounced on the loose ball.

With two minutes left in normal time Stokes broke through on goal but once again the keeper saves his low strike with his feet.

Ireland will meet Gibraltar in their second game on Saturday at Ferrycarrig Park in Wexford. Gibraltar lost 8-0 to Switzerland at the same venue today.

“People may have thought we should score more but I am actually very pleased with the performance and the result. In games like this where you dominant and don’t score many you can get caught out on the counter but we defended very well and deserved our three points,” said head coach Doolin.
