PAUL DOOLIN’S Republic of Ireland U19 side ended their campaign unbeaten but unfortunately missed out on a place in the UEFA Championships after a scoreless draw with hosts Serbia in their final qualifying round fixture at FK Srem, Jakovo today.
With Switzerland suffering a surprise loss to Slovakia at the same time, an Irish victory would have been enough to secure a place in the finals in Lithuania.
The Serbs ended up topping the group on goal difference after looking comfortable in the deciding game. With the Slovaks in control against the ten-man Swiss in the other game the hosts knew they just had to avoid defeat against Doolin’s side to progress.
Irish keeper Ian Lawlor was not overly extended in the first half as he deatlt with a header from Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and ushered a shot by Uros Djurdjevic around his post.
Ireland had some half chances with Kieran Sadlier’s tame shot and Sam Byrne getting in behind the Serbia backline but failing to produce a testing effort on goal.
Andrija Lukovic had a free-kick narrowly off target before Lawlor tipped over a shot from substitute Milan Vojvodic.
Marko Pavlovski was denied by a Pierce Sweeney block and Aleksandar Mitrovic headed straight at Lawlor before making another late stop to deny Slobodan Urosevic.
