Match report
Republic of Ireland 0-1 Greece

The Republic of Ireland Under-17’s look to be out of the running to advance into the Elite phase of the UEFA qualification series following their defeat to Greece in Beggen this evening.

Group winners Greece and mini-groups hosts Luxembourg took the two automatic qualifying places into the next phase and Ireland’s only chance of remaining in the competition rests on whether they are one of the two third-placed sides with the best record against the leading pair in their group across the 13 preliminary pools.

Ireland were chasing the game from early on after they conceded after only four minutes.

Through Greece’s first attack, Tachmazidis controlled the ball brilliantly on his chest before burying a shot past goalkeeper Ciaran Gallagher from ten yards.

It was an uphill struggle for Ireland thereafter as they took time to put their stamp on the game.

Ten minutes had elapsed when they began to take a foothold, with Stephen McDonnell testing the goalkeeper through a shot from distance and Jeff Hendrick angling his header wide with two chances a minute apart.

Greece’s goal-scorer Tachmazidis was a threat once more in the 12th minute after he forced Gallagher into a fantastic tip-over from a shot 30 yards out.

The Irish quickly regrouped from that scare and fashioned two more opportunities before the break when Ryan Connolly twice came close to leveling.

The Greeks were cohesive in their defending on the second half, restricting Ireland to few attempts at goal.

Connolly was again in the action on the hour mark through a header which was well saved and Eoin Wearen fired a shot over the bar nine minutes later.

West Ham United midfielder Wearen was on the end of Ireland’s best chance to reach parity in the dying seconds.

Substitute Patrick McEleney set up John Egan to shoot from his cross and when the defender’s attempt was blocked, Wearen sliced his effort wide from close range.
