Republic of Irealnd 1 Russia 1

Ireland took on Russia for the second occasion in two days on the short trip abroad.

Ireland were without injured pair Danny Kelly and Lanre Oyebanjo and for the second game in succession conceeded an early goal.

There appeared little danger when a defender gave away a free kick after 1 minute about 35 yards out.

However a wondefully struck free kick by the Russian centre half beat Harry Lee "all ends up" and to be fair proabaly would have beaten the legendry Lev Yashin so good was the free .

Ireland were not playing with the zip and dash that saw them push Russia all the way in the first game.

It may have been the early start or the 20 degrees weather but Ireland looked lethargic.

Russia raced into a four nil lead before Ireland got their act together when James Collins for the second sucessive game scored.

Ireland looked as if they might make a game of it when they were awarded a penalty one minute later but Captain Ian Daly placed the ball in the corner.

However the Russian keeper guessed correctly and dived to make a fine save.

And so Ireland's final chance of pulling Russia back faded into the midday sun.
