The Irish Times reported on the game the following day
"Dalymount Park hasn't seen anything like this for a long long time! Johnny Giles Ireland's new soccer supremo, had promised us something out of the ordinary... perhaps even a win in this the first leg of the European Championship game against the Soviet Union; but it is doubtful if there was one among the estimated 35,000 Dalymount Park attendance who was properly prepared for the 90 minutes of excitement, incident and splendor that marked this magnificent 3-0 victory"
This will go down as Don Givens game. On the 25th occasion that he was to represent his country he came up with the goods scoring a hat trick in one of the most memorable day ever in "Dalyer"
With Johnny Giles as manager and Liam Brady making his debut this was probabaly one of the best wins that Ireland had ever produced up to this date.
From early on there were signs that was to be Ireland's day as Giles, Brady and Heighway having a "ball" in the middle of the park meant the two front runners Givens and Treacy had plenty of action.
The first breakthrough was made in the 23rd minute Giles set up Kinnear whose cross was met first time by Givens and he gave Pilgui no chance from 18 yards.
Givens second was forced home from close in after a throw in by Heighway found Treacy who headed towards the near upright for Givens to pounce.
Terry Mancini and Vladimir Kaplichny saw red after 32 minutes after a scuffle in the box.
Givens got his third in the 70th minute when he headed home from another perfectly placed free kick taken by Giles.
Giles almost put his name on a goal but Pilgui tipped his left foot volley over the bar after 84 minutes.
On Liam Brady’s debut this is how the Times reported the occasion
“ The 18 year old showed a footballing maturity that was positively amazing. He had the courage to take on his midfield opponents and beat them: he had the strength and skill that is necessary against such tough adversaries and of even more importance, the ability to spray his passes with an accuracy that belies description”
Other players to shine in an outstanding team performance were Paddy Mulligan, Mick Martin when he was moved back to sweeper after Manicini's sending off and Steve Heighway who did not always endear himself to the Irish public had one of his better days.
Don Givens who was presented with the match ball said taht it aws the first hat trick of his career and " From the moment I made contact with Joe Kinnear's cross I knew the ball was on the way into the net for the first goal."
Giles when asked after the game expressed his satisfaction and stated " This result illustrates the value yet again of get togethers like the close season tour of South America and the recent collective- training session in London"
