Republic of Ireland “B” 6-1 Northern Ireland “B”
J. Hughes (18,61)
Ronan Murray (30,37,38)
Shane Howard (43)
In the first game of the afternoon, the Republic of Ireland “B” blitzed their Northern Ireland counterparts for six goals with just one in reply.
The Irish took the lead after just 18 minutes when Jason Hughes made a surging run through midfield and fired an unstoppable shot from 25 yards out.
Erris United striker, Ronan Murray scored an incredible hat-trick in the space of eight minutes as he punished the Northern Ireland defence dearly for their mistakes. After 30 minutes, Murray picked up the ball on the right wing and cut inside the box beating his marker and slotted it in the bottom corner.
The Irish were relentless in their attack and after some good passing moves in the middle of the park, Callum O’Shea made an incisive run down the left wing to deliver a pin-point cross to Murray who made no mistake with his powerful header.
Things got worse for Northern Ireland a minute later when a long ball through from the Republic’s defence was misjudged by the keeper, allowing the ball bounce over his head and Ronan Murray was on hand to slot the ball in to the empty net to complete his hat-trick.
Shane Howard heaped more misery on his Irish counterparts with a goal after 43 minutes while Jason Hughes scored his second of the afternoon to make it 6-0. Northern Ireland scored a consolation goal in the last minute of the game due to some casual defending in the Republic’s defence.
