Republic of Ireland U19 0-2 Spain U19
The Republic of Ireland lost to Under-19 Midlands tournament champions Spain at Lissywoolen Stadium tonight in Athlone.
Spain had already been assured the four-nations title after defeating Ukraine and Portugal in their two previous matches this week while the Irish were seeking to put their first points on the board.
Spain’s Yago Falque had the first real attempt on goal with seven minutes gone with a rasping drive which cleared the crossbar by inches.
Mario Gasper scored the opener after 12 minutes when he unleashed a shot 25 yards out from the right which Ireland goalkeeper Kieron Thorp couldn’t prevent going in off the post despite getting his hand to the effort.
The Irish finished the half strongly as Danny Kelly, playing in a new role as the midfield anchor-man, began to exert control in the engine-room.
Conor Clifford and Conor Henderson were also in the central area and getting plenty of the ball without being successful in carving out too many opportunities against a Spainish defence yet to concede a goal this season.
Ismal Lopez tested Thorp with a low shot on the run seven minutes before half-time and the Crystal Palace stopper brilliantly pushed the ball out for a corner in what was his last action before Ger Hanley came in at the break.
Hanley won’t have been pleased with his introduction to proceedings as Spain bagged a second goal three minutes after the restart.
An innocuous-looking cross from the left was delivered to the edge of the area which the ‘keeper nor his defenders failed to cut out and Falque had the simple task of rolling the ball into an empty net.
Stung by that goal, Ireland hit back in admirable fashion and had the Spaniards on the rack for the next quarter of an hour.
A foul after 57 minutes on Clifford led to a free-kick in a dangerous position and Jamie Devitt swirled his shot around the defensive wall to force a wonderful save by Diego Marino who tipped the ball out around the post.
Ireland's captain for the game, Callum Morris, spurned a good chance to half the deficit with a 71st minute shot that blasted over from 12 yards.
Spain weathered thier most vunerable patch to see out the match and maintain a 100 per cent record at the inaugural event.
